Paul Bullard's Pledgepage for Rock 'n Roll Marathon Team in Training
January 2002
Dear Friends and Family, As a way to celebrate my 40th year I have decided to take on a challenge. On Sunday, June 2, 2002 I will run in the Rock ‘n Roll Marathon in San Diego, California. I am part of the Minnesota Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team In Training (TNT). I read about Team In Training in a running magazine and decided to investigate. Team In Training is: § An endurance sports training program for runners, walkers, cyclists & triathletes. § Each participant (me) trains in honor of a local leukemia or lymphoma survivor while raising funds to support research for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma and to improve the quality of life of local survivors and their families. Reasons to Support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society: § Leukemia is the #1 disease killer of children under 15 years of age & strikes 10 times as many adults. Every nine minutes a child or adult dies from leukemia or a related cancer. § The five-year survival rates for acute lymphocytic leukemia in children have improved from an appalling 4 percent in 1960 to 80 percent today. § Lymphoma rates rose by more than 70%, which made it the third fastest rising cancer in the country from the mid ‘70’s to the ‘90’s. § The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is committed to becoming the leader among voluntary health agencies in terms of percentage of dollars spent directly on research. Our local honoree is Robert. He lives in the Twin Cities, is thirty-two years old and was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL) in 1990. He has a wife and two children and is currently in remission. I have a website that I am going to use to track my training, miscellaneous thoughts and how it feels to be running in honor of Robert. You have obviously found the website. I will update this website on a weekly basis. Please fill out the guest book on the site. As a member of Team in Training, I have a coach, a training program, and 30 plus teammates to support me. I am committed to the training program and to training with the team each weekend. Each member of our team is committed to two goals: 1. Train for and complete the marathon (26.2 miles) in honor and/or memory of someone. 2. Raise $3,500 minimum for leukemia and related cancer research and patient aid in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota. By now I hope you agree with me about the importance of this cause. Please help support this wonderful organization and me by giving generously. Contributing money is a powerful way to be involved when you cannot give your time. Use the enclosed envelope for your tax-deductible contribution. To facilitate the arranging of our travel plans and to plan for further fund raising efforts the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society asks that we get as many donations by February 28th as possible. Of course, if you need extra time I’ll accept your contribution after that date. Checks can be made out to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or LLS. Many corporations also have a matching gift program; usually you can speak to your human resources contact to inquire about this program. If the company you work for has such a program they may match your contribution dollar for dollar!! If you are the owner of a business or work for a larger company that may be interested in corporate sponsorship just let me know and I can have some information sent to you. Thank you in advance for your support and on behalf of the true marathoners like our honoree Robert – the people enduring serious illness – thank you for your generosity. I’ll have you all in my thoughts every step of the way on June 2. With my sincere thanks and appreciation, Paul Bullard |
